One of the biggest pushes for the digitization of manufacturing processes is the elimination of paper and manual input into spreadsheets. According to the Manufacturing Enterprise Solution Association, 60% of Tier 1 manufacturers surveyed in 2014 were still reliant on paper and/or spreadsheet tracking.<a name='more'></a>
Those operations confront some very costly realities including exposure to errors; constant training and checking of documents steering attention away from data collection; slowness in data collection; inability to react in realtime to events. The bottom line in all of these realities is increased costs of operation and increased COGS.
</span><br />
<span>
Many manufacturers, realizing the inherent inefficiencies of paper and spreadsheets, are making steps toward digitization of their processes. They are looking toward Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) as a part of their digitization process, but should be including Yield Management as well. When examining their options, some of the key characteristics that are important to their decision process are:
</span>
</div>
<ul style="font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin: 3.2rem 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<li style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 2.4rem 0px 2.4rem 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span>
<strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Ease of configuration.</strong> Whether it is the loading of BOM’s, parts, or processes the ideal MES will allow the users to load the information in accordance to their procedures and processes rather than relying on consultants to complete the work for them.
</span>
</li>
<li style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 2.4rem 0px 2.4rem 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span>
<strong>Tracking and traceability.</strong> The ideal MES system will be able to track processes and products through a variety of methods – user input, systems data transfer, bar code scanners, and auxiliary inputs like sensors. This in-depth tracking leads to tighter product genealogy traceability, resulting in true inventory management. However, product performance testing and yield trending is a critical component of overall reliability and cost control. This is the domain of a Yield Management system.
</span>
</li>
<li style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 2.4rem 0px 2.4rem 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span>
<strong>Thorough data collection.</strong> Data collection needs to reach beyond just the manufacturing process. It needs to capture from product performance testing, machine performance monitoring, and qualification data internally and from suppliers. Only with an integrated Yield Management system is this achievable. This type of system stores data in a unified data structure, that binds it to the MES transactions, for true factory performance monitoring and deep product genealogy traceability. Digital transactional records make analytics timely and quick; data is more accessible for collaboration and realtime response to events.
</span>
</li>
<li style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 2.4rem 0px 2.4rem 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span>
<strong>Quick and Universal Access.</strong> The ideal MES + Yield Management system is browser based, eliminating the need for additional hardware, and accessible from anywhere in the network. Access to data should be graphical and coordinated so that decision making is visual, transparent, and timely.
</span>
</li>
</ul>

Organizational maturity is a critical growth challenge for Middle Market Manufacturers (MMM), and is often ignored. The different organization maturity models – each with their own nomenclature, characteristics and stages - creates confusion and a willingness to ignore it as a strategic imperative. However, once an MMM puts emphasis on increasing organizational maturity, they can improve in the following ways:<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><i>Improve Costs</i> – Better controls, strategic allocations</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><i>Increased Productivity</i> – Less time wasted in inefficient processes</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #666666; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><i>Better Quality of Information</i> – One information source of trusted data</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="color: #a00031; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961);">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961);">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The old adage is applicable: “You can’t improve what you can’t measure.” Driving organizational maturity requires the right metrics, in order to develop and implement an effective improvement plan.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So what is a good measure of maturity levels? First, break it down by people, process, technology and measurement. Here is one of many example outlines for doing this:</span></div>
<div class="slate-resizable-image-embed slate-image-embed__resize-full-width" data-imgsrc="https://media.licdn.com/mpr/mpr/AAEAAQAAAAAAAAfPAAAAJDE1NWU1NDBlLTA2MzEtNDJhMi1iOGYxLTI0MGVhOWMwYzM2Zg.png" style="border: 0px; clear: both; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin: 3.2rem 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img src="https://media.licdn.com/mpr/mpr/AAEAAQAAAAAAAAfPAAAAJDE1NWU1NDBlLTA2MzEtNDJhMi1iOGYxLTI0MGVhOWMwYzM2Zg.png" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; height: auto; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 744px;" /></span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Note that in more mature organizations, the people are engaged, the processes are understood and drive improvement, and data is used to drive decisions.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once MMMs have determined where they are in the maturity levels, they often struggle to make the leap to the next level– typically constrained by budget. Finding cost effective ways to automate processes and collect data – especially on the production floor is a strategic first step. </span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Two specific needs are process control, and automation of data collection. First, an IT-based enterprise manufacturing execution system providing real-time product, resource and performance traceability is needed to bring the people, processes and technology to the next levels. Second, a powerful, intuitive, real-time yield management system that enables quick identification of root cause and areas for improvement, through graphical trend analysis, statistical process control, and failure analysis will bring people, processes, and measurement together for data-driven decisions.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Finding the right products supporting the move up to more mature organization levels is critical. Especially for MMMs that are looking to increase their competitiveness through organizational maturity using cost-effective automation and data collection tools.</span></div>
